Pirates Take Win over Falcons

 

WHEELERSBURG—The Wheelersburg Pirates (4-2, 4-0) defeated the Minford Falcons (9-1, 6-1) by a 9-6 score on Wednesday April 11, 2018.

The Falcons scored first in the top of the first inning. Brayden Davis opened with a single. He stole second and with two outs, Ethan Lauder hit a single that scored Davis. Minford led 1-0.

The Pirates took the lead in the bottom of the first inning. Trey Carter opened with a double. With one out, Cole Dyer hit a single that scored Carter. Xander Carmichael followed with a single and both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Connor Mullins hit a sacrifice fly that scored Dyer for a 2-1 lead.

In the top of the second inning, Minford regained the lead. Nathan McCormick hit a one-out single. Bailey Rowe followed with another single. Elijah Voglesong-Lewis hit brought in McCormick. Rowe scored on a bulk. Minford led 3-2.

Wheelersburg regained the lead in the bottom of the second. With one out, Athan Temponeras hit a single. Will Darling was hit by a pitch. Cole Ratcliff hit a single to load the bases. With one out, Jalen Miller hit into a fielder’s choice that scored Temponeras and saw Ratcliff out. Cole Dyer then hit a 3-run home run to give the Pirates a 6-3 lead.

Wheelersburg added to their lead in the bottom of the third inning. Athan Temponeras led off by reaching base on an error. Will Darling’s sacrifice moved him to second base. With two outs, Trey Carter hit a single that scored Temponeras. Wheelersburg led 7-3.

Minford cut into the lead in the top of the fourth inning. With one out, Elijah Voglesong-Lewis walked. He stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch. He then scored on another wild pitch. The lead was cut to 7-4.

In the top of the sixth, Minford cut the lead to just one. With one out, Brayden Davis hit a single. With two out, Luke Lindamood hit a home run that brought in Davis also. The lead was cut to 7-6.

The Pirates got two insurance runs back in the bottom of the sixth. Jalen Miller started off with a single. Cole Dyer walked, and both stole a base. Xander Carmichael walked. Miller scored on an error. Connor Mullins singled to load the bases. Jarrett Stamper singled to score Dyer. Wheelersburg led 9-6.

Cole Dyer pitched the first six innings and part of the seventh for the Pirates. He gave up six runs on 13 hits and two walks. He struck out four. Connor Mullins pitched the rest of the seventh inning. He gave up one hit. Elijah Voglesong-Lewis pitched five innings giving up nine runs on eight hits, three walks and one hit-by-pitch. He struck out one. Bailey Rowe pitched one inning and gave up two hits.
