Ann King

Anna Elizabeth King, 84, formerly of Portsmouth, Ohio, died peacefully surrounded by family on Saturday, September 13, 2025, at Otterbein Sunset Village in Sylvania, Ohio.

Ann was born on September 29, 1940, in New Boston, Ohio, to Wallace and Lillian (Urick) Crull.

She grew up in Portsmouth and was a proud graduate of Portsmouth High School.  Although she planned to join the military after high school, she changed courses by getting married and starting her family.  Her husband’s military career took her to Germany for three years and then onto several states in the US before landing in Toledo, Ohio, in 1965. She lived in the Toledo area for 30 years before moving back to Portsmouth.

Ann built a successful career in retail management. She held various management roles in the Southland Corporation, Dollar General, Rite Aid Drugs, Revco, and CVS. After retiring from CVS, she went back to work at Wurster Drugs in Portsmouth, where she retired for the second time. Known for not sitting still for long, Ann continued to work part-time until she was 80.

Ann’s life was one of service.  While in Toledo, she was a deacon at Second Baptist Church, as well as the youth group leader for several years in addition to serving on various committees.  She was an active member of Second Presbyterian Church in Portsmouth, serving as a deacon. She spent several years as an Ombudsman, advocating for residents in nursing homes. She spent countless hours volunteering for any organization that needed her help.

The daughter of a seamstress, Ann was skilled at sewing and loved joining her sisters on Mondays to sew and quilt. She was one of 11 girls, who were as much her friends as sisters. She loved spending time with her beloved sisters. Back in the day, they would take long weekend trips to Las Vegas, not sleeping a wink for fear of missing out on the action!

She was a curious, lifelong learner. She obtained her real estate license at age 60.  At age 70, she went back to school to try her hand at medical billing. Although that didn’t work out for her, she was not afraid to try.

Ann’s greatest pride and joy was her family. Her kids, grandkids, and great grandkids meant the world to her. She celebrated their every achievement, milestone, and triumph. Her face lit up whenever one of them walked into the room, especially the littles.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Walt (Kim) King, Angie (Paul) Kortier, Carla (Bill) Scott, Katie (Rock) Vetell, and Jeremy (Abbey) King; sisters Janet Castle, Kay Trogdon, Gail Picklesimer, Judy Morrison, and Mary Crull; 9 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters Bettie Glanton, Emily Hileman, Inez Charles, Patty Ober, and Helen Royal; and infant brother Wallace Samuel Crull.

The family will receive visitors from 11:00 am – 12:30 pm Friday, September 26, 2025, at McKinley Funeral Home in Lucasville with a funeral service at 12:30 p.m., Allison Bauer officiating. Burial will follow at Memorial Burial Park in Wheelersburg.

The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to all her caregivers at Otterbein Sunset Village for their amazing, compassionate care; and to Ashanti Hospice.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to Sierra’s Haven (pet shelter) in Portsmouth, Ohio.
