John W. Woodard Sr.
John W. Woodard Sr., 69, of Lucasville, passed away Thursday, July 18, 2024 at SOMC Hospice.
He was born October 1, 1954 in Portsmouth, a son of the late Claude H. and Freda Hayden Woodard. John was a 1972 Northwest High School graduate and served in the US Marine Corps during the Vietnam war. He was a former volunteer fireman with Valley Township and retired as a corrections officer from the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility with 30 years of service.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Herman Woodard.
John is survived by his wife, Barbara Ann Vest Woodard, who he married December 22, 1972 in McDermott; his daughter, Melissa (Chris) Pfeifer of Piketon; his sons, John W. Woodard II of Lucasville and Ryan (Annie) Woodard of McDermott; his brother, Claude A. Woodard of McDermott; his sisters, Linda Keezee of Pomeroy and Susan “Sue” Flyte of Pennsylvania; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 24, 2024 at the McKinley Funeral Home in Lucasville, with Tom Pfeifer officiating. Burial will follow in Rushtown Cemetery, with the United States flag presentation by the William A. Baker Post American Legion and the state of Ohio flag presentation by the SOCF Honor Guard. Friends may call Tuesday from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home, and an hour prior to the service on Wednesday.
