HUMAN REMAINS FOUND IN WHEELERSBURG AREA IDENTIFIED

 

Scioto County Sheriff Marty V. Donini announces that on Thursday March 13, 2019 the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office received a call from an individual stating they believed they had found human remains in a field located in the 5400 block of SR 522 in Wheelersburg.

 

Deputies and Detectives responded along with Portsmouth Police Detectives and an Agent from Ohio BCI&I to investigate. The remains were located in a wooded are next to a field alongside SR522.

 

Captain John W. Murphy said the remains are that of 26-year-old Rebecca Lee Kerns who was reported missing to the Portsmouth Police Department in October of 2018. The Sheriff’s Office received confirmation on the identification on Sunday March 17thfrom the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office.

 

On Monday March 18, 2019 Detectives from the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office, and the Portsmouth Police Department notified the next of kin of Rebecca Lee Kerns. This case will now be a joint investigation between the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office and the Portsmouth Police. The investigation will now focus on how Kerns ended up off SR 522 and what the cause of death was.
