Take Your Child to the Library Day

Instill a love for reading in your children by taking them to the closest library in your community this weekend. Saturday, February 2 is National Take Your Child to the Library Day.
“We invite parents to bring their children to any of the library locations,” said Katie Williams, publicity and program manager with the Portsmouth Public Library. “Every child that visits the library on that day is going to be entered to win a red Amazon Fire 7.”
This is the 8th year for the Take Your Child to the Library initiative which began in 2011 in the Waterford and Stratford Connecticut Public Libraries. The goal of the day according to the event’s webpage is to raise community awareness about the importance of the library in the life of a child and to promote the libraries services, events and programs available for both children and their parents.
Williams said the day is centered around children seventeen and under. She said the Portsmouth Public Library as well as the branch libraries will be offering special programs on that day.
“There’s a lot of library holidays throughout the year. We have national library week and there’s a whole month to sign up for your library card. This is kind of an extra day to get people in the community to bring their kids into the library,” Williams said.
The Youth Services Department at the Portsmouth Public Library will have supplies for kids to make bookmarks to take home from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Lucasville Branch Library will have a llama themed story and craft from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. Registration is not required by is appreciated by calling the library at 740-259-6119. From 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. the Wheelersburg Branch Library will be offering a take and make craft for children to take home and enjoy. The New Boston Branch Library will observe Take Your Child to the Library Day on Monday, February 4 at 4:00 p.m. The children who attend will be custom painting bookends for them to use at home.
