Scioto students present at District 14 Science Day

   More than 100 area students presented at the District 14 Science Day, on Saturday, March 24, at the University of Rio Grande.

    Of the 117 local students presenting 98 projects, 25 projects and 28 students qualified to advance to State Science Day on May 12 at Ohio State University, and six projects and seven students qualified for the Buckeye Science and Engineering Fair May 13-18 in Pittsburgh.

   The following Scioto County students earned a superior rating at District 14 and qualified for State Science Day:

Marissa Trowbridge (Minford Middle School),

Viviana Wheeler (Notre Dame), Morgan Stiles (Portsmouth West Middle School),

Camry Carpenter (Valley Middle School), Rachel Davenport (Wheelersburg Middle School),

Dev Patel (Wheelersburg Middle School),

Haleigh Collier (Wheelersburg Middle School).

Awards that Scioto County students won at the District 14 Science Day include:

Marissa Trowbridge(Minford Middle School) – Ohio Soybean Bioscience Award,

Barrett VanSickle (Minford Middle School) – Emerging Scientist Award in Earth and Biological Sciences,

Haleigh Collier (Wheelersburg Middle School) – Emerging Scientist Award in Engineering and Computer Science,

Ethan Swick (Minford Middle School) – Emerging Scientist Award in Medicine and Health Sciences,

Haleigh Collier (Wheelersburg Middle School) – Emerging Scientist Award in Health and Applied Sciences,

Jadelyn Lawson (Oak Intermediate Elementary School) – The Emerging Scholar Award,

Ethan Swick (Minford Middle School) – The Emerging Scholar Award,

Viviana Wheeler (Notre Dame) – OTTA CollegeAdvantage 529 Savings Plan Award,

Morgan Stiles (West Middle School) – OTTA CollegeAdvantage 529 Savings Plan Award (alternate).

   “It was very enlightening to see the types of problems and questions these students were tackling with their projects. I never in a million years would have thought that middle school and high school students would be taking up the projects that they did. It was very inspiring to see that,” said John Means, director of District 14 Science Day at Rio Grande. “It’s apparent that these students are being well-prepared. These projects really are a reflection of not just the students, but also the teachers and the time they have spent working with them.”

   Due to a conflict with another scholastic event, Rohit and Serena Kataria, of Wheelersburg Schools, were unable to attend the District 14 Science Day; they instead attended District 8 Science Day at OU Lancaster. Serena won the Fairfield Medical Award, and Rohit qualified for Buckeye Science and Engineering Fair which provides a chance to advance to International Fair. He also won a one-year subscription to Popular Science, awarded to top 10 high school scorers. Both received Superior ratings and will advance to State Science Day. Both Rohit and Serena Kataria won the Gabriel Medical Award and the Burger Medical Science Award.
