Officer Involved Shooting

The suspect in the officer involved shooting has been identified as Anthony Kolp of Kernersville, NC.  The incident which occurred on the night of Thursday 10 April at around 7pm, is still under investigation. Portsmouth Police Officers had been attempting to locate the suspect in connection with a burglary of a local business on the night of the incident.  Officers were able to locate the suspect in the Walmart parking lot in New Boston, OH which led to a foot chase, during which the suspect pointed a firearm at officers who in return, fired at the suspect. The suspect was then cornered by local law enforcement, including Portsmouth PD, New Boston PD, OSP, the Scioto County SO, and Portsmouth Municipal Court Probation, at 4307 Rhodes Ave., in New Boston, where he refused to surrender while still armed. Eventually officers with the Portsmouth SWAT team were able to locate the hidden suspect, who then fired rounds at them. The SWAT team returned fire wounding the suspect.  No innocents or officers were injured during the gunfight. The suspect is still being treated for his wounds. The investigation is still pending, additional information will be released when appropriate to do so.

The Portsmouth Police Department along with BCI, the New Boston Police Department, The Ohio State Highway Patrol, and the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office are investigating a series of events that lead to an officer involved shooting at 4307 Rhodes Ave in New Boston, OH.  Portsmouth Police Officers and Detectives were looking for a person of interest involved in a Burglary of a local business.  Officers located the suspect in the Walmart parking lot in New Boston, which led to a foot chase. During the chase the suspect brandished a firearm towards officers, who fired at the suspect. The suspect then barricaded himself in a residential backyard at 4307 Rhodes Ave., New Boston. Units from multiple local law enforcement agencies surrounded the property and called in Portsmouth SWAT. Portsmouth SWAT successfully extracted an uninvolved woman and her two tender-age children from the residence to safety and continued to search the premises for the suspect.  The suspect was eventually located under the rear porch of the house, still armed refusing orders to surrender.  The suspect fired shots at the officers who returned fire, wounding the suspect.  No civilians or officers were hurt during the incident.  The suspect is currently being treated for his wounds.  The incident is still under investigation at this time.  If you have any information concerning the event, please contact the Portsmouth Police Department.
