Douglas R. Sommer

Douglas R. Sommer, 75 of So. Webster and formerly of Jackson, OH passed away at home unexpectedly on Wednesday, December 13, 2023.  He was born on October 29, 1948 to the late Homer R. and Addie (Maynard) Sommer in Portsmouth, OH.  Doug was a 1966 graduate of South Webster H.S. and was Captain of the Basketball Team in 1965-66.  He attended Ohio University for three years then attended The University of Montana where he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Forestry.  In 1972 he was hired by the Jackson District of Mead Paper Company as a District Forester. He worked for Mead until he took a job with Waterloo Coal in 1985 and worked there until 1994.  He then started a Forestry Consultant Business for a time and finished his career in forestry at Mead WesVaco where he retired in 2015. He loved the outdoors, enjoying camping, hunting and fishing. Doug thoroughly loved spending time with his grandchildren, fishing, kayaking, attending their sporting events and sharing stories around a fire.

Besides his parents, he was also preceded in death by brother Steven Sommer.

Doug is survived by his wife of 51 years, Ladora “Dody” (Hagen) Sommer; children Natasha (Chad) Smith of Oak Hill, Brock Sommer of South Webster and Skyeler Sommer of Jackson; brother Bradley (Susan) Sommer of Minford; grandchildren Addie, Maryn, and Eden Smith, Kyla, Charles “Chase” and William Sommer; 2 close nephews, Shawn and Scott Sommer and many other nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 3-6 PM on Sunday, December 17th  and 10 to 11 AM prior to a Funeral Service at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, December 18th at DW Swick Funeral Home, 10900 OH 140, South Webster, OH 45682.  Mike Lemon and Ed Litteral will officiate.  Interment will follow at Vernon Cemetery, Wheelersburg, OH.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to:  South Webster High School Athletic Dept. 10529 Main St. South Webster, OH 45682.  Online condolences at olivercheekfuneralhome.com
