Evelyn Irene Hughes

Evelyn Irene Hughes, 85, of Portsmouth, passed away Saturday, November 19, 2023 at SOMC Hospice following a brief illness.

She was born September 26, 1938 in Wheelersburg; a daughter of the late John Clyde and Sarah Hamilton Johnson.

Evelyn was a retired secretary for Second Presbyterian Church in Portsmouth and a 1956 Valley High School graduate. Evelyn had also worked as a secretary for the Goodyear Atomic Plant and the Ohio Valley Electric Company and sold real estate in the 1970-1980’s.

She was also preceded in death by a sister, Edna Mae Fletcher and stepdaughter, Sharon Hughes Karr.

Evelyn is survived by her son, Mark Powell (Lisa) of Lucasville; daughter, Dr. Mikel (Larry) Stone of Garrison, KY; stepdaughter Ellen Hughes (Dr. Henry) Setliff of Daniels, WV; grandchildren, Ashley Powell (Chase McGraw), Brett Powell, McKenzie (Laithon) Davis, Lauren (Devin) Routson, Parker (Delana) Stone, Dr. Aaron (Jennifer) Karr, Tracy Karr (Amy Jo Behrman), Lauren Setliff (Adam) Strickler, Natalie Setliff; great grandchildren, Laylee, Brixtyn, Bella, Laynie, Carver, Elliot, Beau, Aaron James, Anna, Emma; and her sister, Ethel Chestnut of Lucasville.

Evelyn loved antiques, refinishing furniture, thrift shopping, cooking, baking bread, riding her bicycle, playing corn hole and spending time with her family.

Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Friday, November 24, 2023 at the McKinley Funeral Home with Pastor Allison Bauer officiating. Burial will follow in Lucasville Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 11:30 a.m. until the funeral hour.
