Charles J. Hartard

Charles J. Hartard, 85, of Portsmouth, died Tuesday, September 19, 2023 at his home, with his family by his side. He was born September 24, 1937, in Wapakoneta, OH, to the late Charles G. and Celia (Brautigam) Hartard.

Chuck graduated from St. Jospeh’s High School in Wapakoneta where he enjoyed playing football, track, and swimming. After graduation, he attended Indiana Technical College in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where he met the love of his life, Noreen Edris. They married on September 2, 1961 and moved to Napoleon, OH where he worked at Campbell Soup Company, for eight years, as a maintenance supervisor. He, then, worked in the Toledo area at Allied Chemical and Questor in plant engineering before joining OSCO Industries in Portsmouth. He worked there from 1976 until his retirement in 2001 as Plant Maintenance Manager. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, loved watching football, walking, woodworking, home projects, and spending time with family.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Noreen (Edris) Hartard, his two daughters, Jennifer Nicely (Mike) of Fairfield, OH and Jill Hartard of Loveland, OH. Grandchildren include Stacy and Sarah (twins), Tyler, and Stephanie. His sister, Marilyn Schippel resides in Mt. Gilead, OH.

Mass will be celebrated at 9:30 A.M. Saturday, September 23, 2023 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Fr. Michael Fulton officiating. Melcher Hammer Funeral Home in Portsmouth is handling the arrangements. Burial will be held in St. Joseph’s cemetery in Wapakoneta, OH at a later date.

The family would like to invite everyone who knew Chuck to the St. Mary’s Hall after Mass, for a celebration of his life.
