Gerald “Jerry” McGinnis

Surrounded by family, Gerald “Jerry” McGinnis 77, went to be with his Lord and Savior, October 28, 2022, at his residence.

He was born March 15, 1945, in Portsmouth, a son of the late Art and Louise Winters McGinnis of Stout.

Jerry was a 1963 Portsmouth West graduate and a 1967 graduate of Ohio University with a Bachelor of Science in Education. He was a retired teacher and coach in the Valley Local School System with 44 years of service. Jerry taught a variety of grade levels, was Principal at Glendale Elementary, and coached almost every sport and all levels. His career allowed him to impact the lives of many, but his greatest achievement was his family.

He was a 32nd degree Mason, member of the Valley of Cincinnati Scottish Rite, Calvary and Commandery #13, Portsmouth Knights Templar, Royal Arch Masons of Ohio Mt. Vernon Chapter #23, Lucasville Masonic Lodge No. 465, and his home lodge, Rome No. 535. He attended Dry Run Church of Christ in West Portsmouth.

Jerry was an avid outdoorsman. He loved to hunt, fish, and collect arrowheads. He spent hours on the Ohio River banks and the hills of Shawnee Forest. He loved to go fishing in Ely, Minnesota with his fishing buddies, Phil Shepherd, Doug Booth, Cousin Harvey Tipton, and the late Paul Gregory.

Jerry is survived by his loving wife, Margaret Ann Hornikel McGinnis whom he married March 31, 1963, at Careys Run, they shared a wonderful 59 years of marriage; two daughters, Cynthia (Craig) Bell and Christina “Nikki” (Michael) Crotty both of Lucasville; one son, Gerald Scott (Tracy) McGinnis of Minford; six grandchildren, Brittani Bentley, Larin Perry, Whitney Yates, Megan Zimmer, Kori McGinnis, and Cooper Crotty; nine great grandchildren, Jaxon, Nash, Bowen, Josilyn, Kamri, Mila, Kolt, Grant, and Reese; and one brother, William Michael McGinnis of Columbia, TN.

Funeral services will be conducted at noon, Wednesday, November 2, 2022, at the Dry Run Church of Christ with Mark Seevers officiating. Burial will follow in Scioto Burial Park. Friends may call 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the McKinley Funeral Home in Lucasville and an hour prior to the service at the church Wednesday. A Masonic Funeral will be conducted Tuesday at 8:15 after visitation.
