Elizabeth “Betty” Joy (Dixon) Bloomer
Elizabeth “Betty” Joy (Dixon) Bloomer, 92, died on September 14, 2022, at her home. Betty was born on June 9, 1930, the 10th child of Warren Dixon and Lula May (Blevins) Dixon. She attended Friendship Elementary and graduated from Portsmouth West in 1948. On April 22, 1949, she married Clarence Buford Bloomer, who preceded her in death. Clarence and Betty had 5 children: Brenda Sue, Cheryl Jean, Stephen Clarence, Kathy Joy and John Phillip.
Betty was a full-time homemaker, keeping a lovely home, growing flowers and vegetables, sewing, and decorating. She was devoted to her family. She also mentored other young people through teaching Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and Jr. Church at Turkey Creek Free Will Baptist Church, as well as by leading Cub Scouts and 4-H Clubs. She volunteered as church treasurer, visited the sick and helped many people who were in need. As a senior citizen, Betty attended Shawnee State University, enrolling in many different classes, including piano lessons. She took visual arts classes, and painted many pictures. Her acrylic paintings are especially beautiful. Betty became interested in genealogy and did much research, traveling when necessary to get information from libraries and cemetery monuments. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution Joseph Spencer Chapter and had been very active in the past.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband Clarence; son Steve; and 9 siblings, Marcia Cronin, Gladys McNutt, James Dixon, Gene “Bill” Dixon, Helen Crawford, Joseph Dixon, Norma Perry and infant brothers Bobbie and Benjamin Dixon.
Surviving her are four children, Brenda (Charles) Cobb of Portsmouth, Cheryl (Dennis) Chamberlin of Irwin, PA, Kathy Bloomer, with whom she made her home and John Bloomer of West Portsmouth; her grandchildren, Matthew (Wendy) Chamberlin , Rachael McGinnis, Benjamin (Briea) Chamberlin, John Bloomer Jr. Nathaniel (Sandra) McGinnis, Aaron (Tiffany) Chamberlin, Joanna (Robert) Deal, Melissa (Justin) Smith, Elizabeth Chamberlin, Hannah (Drew) Howard, and Esmeralda Bloomer Sanchez; great- grandchildren, Nathaniel McGinnis, Layla McGinnis, Ryan McGinnis, Miley Chamberlin, Tate Chamberlin, Emma Chamberlin, Chloe Chamberlin, Kaelyn Smith, Carter Smith, Wyatt Chamberlin, Reese Chamberlin, Holden Howard, Ashlynn Swords, Bobby, Adriana and Alexa Deal, and Larisa Fausto Bloomer.
Funeral services will be held at 1 P.M. Monday at Turkey Creek Free Will Baptist Church with Rev. David Sibole officiating and interment in Friendship Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the Ralph F. Scott Funeral Home in Portsmouth on Sunday from 6 to 9 P.M. and one hour prior to services at the church Monday.
