Hazel Delores  Piatt

On Wednesday, August 31st  at 9:00AM Hazel Dolores Piatt, co-founder of Piatt Quality Eggs Inc., wife and mother of one child Larry L. Piatt, Passed away at the age of 92. Hazel was born on November 20, 1929 to Guy W. Rice and Garnet Estelle Hinze Rice of Dry Run.

Hazel was a 1947 graduate of Portsmouth West high school. She then attended Portsmouth Business College for a short while. Hazel went to work at Wheeling Steel and the Atomic Energy Plant. Taking time off and married her loving husband, David L Piatt in July 1949. David and Hazel proudly delivered Larry L. Piatt on March 18, 1950. Together Dave and Hazel took over a small fresh shell egg business in 1949. Piatt Quality Eggs Inc. was formed in 1955. Together they worked to build a tri-state client base including the largest supermarket east of the Mississippi River. The B & B Food Market Proudly featured fresh eggs from Piatt Quality Eggs Inc. for 39 years. Due to Hazels timeless efforts and the couples efforts and the help of a son attending The Ohio State University they became the second largest supplier of fresh eggs and related dairy products for over 14 years to the Columbus and surrounding areas. The business was sold in 1983. After David Piatt passed on July 4, 1981, Hazel began her new life journey. Leaving her son Larry Piatt to care for the egg business she moved to Columbus beginning a career change with her realtors and leasing real estate license. Hazel was always in the top five sales professionals of the company winning many awards and as she said “enjoying her job every day”. Making young families smile having their first home, Hazel retired in 1975 due to health problems. Hazel volunteered as a breast cancer survivor at SOMC and helped many survivors. Hazel loved her flower club and all the ladies very much she was also involved with her annual class reunion activities for the class of 1947.

She is preceded in death by her parents Guy W. Rice and Garnet Estelle Hinze Rice as well as by her brother, Robert Carey Rice, her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Harold W. “Dick” Piatt and Louise A. Piatt, and her very special friend and caretaker of our family of over 44 years Judith Kutsbaugh who passed away December of 2020 from COVID-19.

With her son Larry L. Piatt surviving she is also survived by 4 grandchildren whom were all dearly loved by grandma and father Larry, Rebekah A. Elizabeth Piatt, David Alexander Piatt, Benjamine Skyler Piatt, Sarah Anne Elizabeth Estelle Piatt, her sister-in-law and special friend Majorie Rice, and several special nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held a noon on Wednesday September 7, 2022 at the Roger W. Davis Funeral Home in West Portsmouth with Ralph Clay officiating and interment in Scioto Burial Park.
