Matthew Jay Cooper

Matthew Jay Cooper, 11, passed away on Thursday, June 9, 2022 at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio after a lifelong battle with asthma.  He was born on December 5, 2010 in Chillicothe, Ohio son of the late Terrence Robert Cooper and Deborah Diane Schmidt Harris of Orrville, Ohio.  In addition to his mother, Matthew is survived by brother Devin Cooper at home and Rob, Matt and Wyatt Harris at home and a sister Mackenzie Cooper at home; paternal grandparents, Harold and Darla Cooper of Waverly, Ohio; maternal grandmother, Diane Schmidt of West Salem, Ohio; grandparents, Steve and Nancy Hafliger of Fayetteville, Arkansas; great grandmother, Vesta Spriggs of Waverly; aunts and uncles, Jason and Jennifer Nathan of Waverly, Dr. Imre and Dr. Jennifer Orosz of West Salem, and  Don and Jaime Schmidt of Mustang, Oklahoma; cousins, Christopher, Andrew and Katherine Orsoz and Nathaniel and Jacob Schmidt; and many special friends who were considered family.  In addition to his father, Matthew was preceded in death by maternal grandfather, Donald J. Schmidt, great grandparents, Harold B and Ruth Cooper, Thomas and Shirley Keeler and John and Dorthea Schmidt, and great grandfather, Carl Spriggs.

Matthew was a fifth grade student and a member of Northern Ohio Outlaws. He loved to hunt, fish and ride anything with a motor. He gave the gift of life thru organ donation.

Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. on Monday, June 13, 2022 at Grace United Methodist Church Life Center with Pastor David Burriss officiating.  Burial will follow in Evergreen Union Cemetery on Denver Road in Waverly.  Family will receive friends on Monday from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm at the Life Center.
