James H, Giner, Jr.

James H, Giner, Jr., 89, of Portsmouth, passed away Friday, April 29, 2022 at SOMC Hospice in Portsmouth. Born August 15, 1932 in New Boston, Ohio, a son of the late James H. Giner, Sr. and Ruth E. (Meek) Giner, he was a graduate of New Boston High School. He earned his BA in Bible and Missions at Appalachian Bible College, Bradley, West Virginia, and did his post graduate work at Marshall University, Huntington, WV and Liberty University in Virginia. He pastored Eden Park Baptist Church in New Boston, Ohio, Calloway Heights Community Baptist in Beckley, WV and Silver Point Baptist in Tennessee. He served as interim pastor at Emmanuel Baptist and Umtali Baptist, (Rhodesia) Zimbabwe, Africa, and also as a missionary in Rhodesia. He served 10 years doing evangelism and church planting work. Due to unsafe working conditions, the Mission Board decided their missionaries should leave. When returning to that field did not get safer, he worked at the Portsmouth Medicaid Department while pastoring Eden Park Baptist Church. He also was a supervisor for Children Youth and Family Services in Fort Myer, Fla., retired in 1997 after 10 years of service. He was a member of Temple Baptist Church in Portsmouth, and served three years in the U. S. Navy in Korea and China, aboard the USS Manchester from 1950 – 1953.

He is survived by his wife, Abbie Lomeda (Schmid) Giner, whom he married on June 25, 1954 at Emmanuel Baptist Church in New Boston; three daughters, Debra (David) Glatz, of Coconut Creek, Fla., Sandra (J. H.) Morris, of Olive Hill, Ky., Cynthia (Steve) Shriver, of Wake Forrest, North Carolina; grandchildren, Cara (Brad) Dubal, of Georgia, Justin (Kelly) Wilkin, of Georgia, Kristin (Scott) Prager, of Olive Hill, Ky.; great grandchildren, Adison and Remy Wilkin and Linley and Presly Dubal, and three nieces, Kim (Edward) Wright, Karen (Tim) Wagner, and Susan Werner. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters and brothers-in-law, Wilma (Dale) Sperry, Catherine (William) Werner, and one brother, Donald E. Giner, in infancy.

The family would like to thank PCM nurses that cared for him and especially the nurse who helped at the hospital and hospice center, also our neighbors for their kindness.

Funeral services will be conducted 11.00 a.m. Tuesday, May 3, 2022 at Erwin-Dodson-Allen Funeral Home with Pastor John Gowdy officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens in Franklin Furnace. Friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the service on Tuesday. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the James Irwin Post No. 622 and William Baker Post 363.
