Harold L. Barker

Harold L. Barker, age 94, former resident of South Webster and Portsmouth, OH, passed away on October 4, 2021, at Loveland HealthCare in Loveland, OH.  Harold was born in 1927 in Louisa, KY, to George Estil and Myrtle (Collier) Barker.  He was raised and lived most of his life in South Webster, and it was there that he met and married the love of his life, Mary Frances (Jordan) Barker. They were married for 72 years until Mary’s death in March 2019.  Harold was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Mary, and his sisters Dorothy, Rosetta, Mary Elizabeth, and Betty.  He is survived by his brother Ed (Norma) Barker and his sister Martha (Roger) Yeley; brother-in-law Charles Kenneth (Nancy) Jordan, loving children, Phil (Donna) Barker, Joy Barker, Tim (Cindy) Barker, and David (Krista) Barker; grandchildren Alan (Donna) Barker, Mike (Melinda) Barker, Karen (Chad) Mills, and Cara, Jacob, Emma, and Will Barker; great-grandchildren Evan, Drew, and Autumn Barker and Ethan and Addison Mills; several wonderful nieces and nephews; and many friends.

Harold was a very active member of Grace United Methodist Church in South Webster, where he served as a superintendent, sang in the choir, and taught Sunday School. He traveled to other churches on occasion to sing as a soloist.  Harold was also a member of the South Webster-Bloom Township Volunteer Fire Department for many years.  His other favorite activities were playing golf and fixing lawnmowers, and he could often be found at the Portsmouth Elks Country Club or tinkering in his garage.

Harold served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific during WWII as a machinist’s mate.

Viewing will be at 10 a.m. on Friday, October 8, 2021, at D.W. SWICK FUNERAL HOME in South Webster, followed by a service at 11:00 a.m.. Interment will be at the Bloom Township South Webster Cemetery Graveside military honors will be provided by the James Irwin Post #622 of the American Legion. COVID protocols will be observed.
