John B. Bentley

John B. Bentley, 67, of Sciotoville, died suddenly Monday, April 8, 2019 in the Southern Ohio Medical Center.  Born on November 4, 1951 in Portsmouth, he was a son of the late Robert and Nora Hamilton Bentley and was a retired boiler operator for the Portsmouth City Schools.

A graduate of Portsmouth High School and Vo-Tec, where he took auto mechanics, and was retired from the Portsmouth City Schools with 30 years of service.

But most importantly, John was an active member of the Apostolic Gospel Church, where he served in the bus ministry and was a Sunday School superintendent and door greeter for the House of the Lord.  He was a member of the Gospel Keys Quartet and enjoyed singing.

Also preceding him in death were a daughter, Rhonda Bentley, two brothers, Roger and Jim Bentley and a sister, Barbara Wells.

Surviving are his wife, Peggy Skirvin Bentley, a son, John (Tracy) Bentley II of West Portsmouth, a stepson, George (Dawna) Tackett of Edenburg, IN; a stepdaughter, Laurie Tackett of Indianapolis, IN; two brothers, Robert (Judy) Bentley of Missouri and Ted (Vena) Bentley of Newark and Manila, Philippines; a sister, Juanita Ford of Portsmouth, seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A Celebration of John’s Life will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, April 14th, at the Apostolic Gospel Church, 2037 Jackson Avenue, Portsmouth with Pastor Robert Coffey officiating and Rev. Don Hammond saying a few kind words.  Interment will be in Scioto Burial Park.

The family will receive guests at the church after 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.
