John Jacob Miller
John Jacob Miller, 90, of Lucasville passed away Friday, January 18, 2019 at his residence. Born October 14, 1928 in Scioto County, a son of the late Richard Francis & Elizabeth Louise Hammerstein Miller, he was a 1946 Wheelersburg High School graduate, received a Bachelor’s degree from Ohio University and a Master’s degree from Xavier. He was an avid farmer and started his teaching career at Wheelersburg School District and retired from Portsmouth City Schools after 38 years. He attended St. Mary’s Catholic Church and St. Peter in Chains Catholic Church. He was in the United States Army and a WWII veteran. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Ellen & Terry Shope; two grandsons, Zachary Shope, Andrew Shope; five brothers, Donald Miller, Fred (Dorothy) Miller, Ed (Darlene) Miller, Bill (Patsy) Miller, Frank (Rita) Miller; four sisters, Betty Fitzer, Helen Patricia Bowen, Mary Kay (John) Marshall, Teresa (Ted) More, and a special friend, Margie Yeagle. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ellen McKenzie Miller on December 26, 2014 whom he married in 1952.
A Mass of Christian Burial will he held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, January 26, 2019 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Portsmouth with Father Joe Yokum officiating. Burial will be at Lucasville Cemetery. Military graveside rites will be conducted by James Irwin Post No. 622 American Legion and William A. Baker Post No. 363. Arrangements are under the direction of Erwin-Dodson-Allen Funeral Home in Minford. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to SOMC Hospice, 2201 25th Street, Portsmouth, Ohio 45662.
