Roberta Maurine Nickles

Roberta Maurine Nickles, 83, of Portsmouth, passed away Sunday, December 16, 2018 surrounded by her loving family at the SOMC Hospice Center. She was born August 19, 1935 in Portsmouth, a daughter of the late Harold Wayne and Beatrice Louise Everman Hammond.

A 1953 PHS graduate, early in her career she was employed at H&R Block and then she founded Roberta’s Tax Service. She was loved and respected by the many clients she helped by preparing taxes throughout the years. Roberta was one of the twelve founding members of Life Point Church in Portsmouth.

Her husband, George Joseph Nickles, preceded her in death Aug. 21, 2011. They were married in Greenup, KY on Dec. 31, 1954.

Surviving are two sons, Randy (Janie) Nickles of McDermott and Darrell (Christa) Nickles of Portsmouth; three brothers, Harold Ralph (Reva) Hammond of Kettering, Tony (Linda) Hammond of Lucasville and Jesse (Jenny) Hammond of Otway; eight grandchildren, Ryan, Kristin, Andy (Tiffany), Ali, Jordan, Chase and Drake Nickles, and Jacquelyn (Tony) Shiveley; two great grandchildren, Elyn and Adelyn Shiveley; and her beloved cat, Frisky, who now resides with Darrell.

Roberta was also preceded in death by two sons, Rodney Joseph and Tommy Ray Nickles; and a brother, Phillip Duane Hammond.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Life Point Church with Pastor Darrell Nickles officiating and interment in Mt. Zion Cemetery in South Shore, KY.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Ralph F. Scott Funeral Home in Portsmouth, and at the church one hour prior to funeral services Thursday.
