Ruth E. Hershfield,

Ruth E. Hershfield, 84, of Portsmouth, died peacefully on Wednesday at the Southern Ohio Medical Center ICU with her family by her bedside.  She fought a courageous battle for the past 8 months.  Born on May 24, 1934 in Seaman, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Mildred Wolfe Theiss and was a retired data processing supervisor for OSCO with 36 years of service.

Ruth was a 1952 graduate of Portsmouth High School, member of Cornerstone United Methodist Church and former avid bowler.  She enjoyed reading, knitting and especially traveling.  Ruth toured Holland, the Canadian Rockies and Alaska, but had the most fun at Disney World.  At age 80 she went on Splash Mountain and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.

Also preceding her in death were two sisters, Mary Louise Baldwin and Thelma Lane.

Surviving are a daughter, Lisa (Roger) Kepler of Portsmouth; two sisters, Helen Marie Kolarik of Palm Harbor, Fla. and Joyce Theiss of Portsmouth; and grandson she adored, Dustin (Janie) Kepler.

A service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 4th, at Cornerstone United Methodist Church with Rev. Greg Carter officiating.  Interment will be in Greenlawn Cemetery.

A gathering will be held at the church on Monday from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Brant Funeral Service in Sciotoville.

Ruth’s family extends a special “thank you” to the staff at the Southern Ohio Medical Center, including the doctors, nursing and housekeeping.  The service provided was exceptional.
