William Newell “Newt” Horton, Jr.,
William Newell “Newt” Horton, Jr., 83, of Portsmouth passed away Wednesday, June 20, 2018 at Portsmouth Health and Rehab. He was born January 5, 1935 in Portsmouth, a son of the late William Newell and Jane Isabel Vickory Horton.
Newt was the City of Portsmouth Plumbing and Housing Inspector for 32 years and a Korean War era Marine Corps veteran. He earned the Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Service Medal while serving with Marine Air Control Squadron Seven. A member of the Aurora Masonic Lodge #48 F&AM, he was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving is his wife of 55 years, Maxine O. York Horton, whom he married September 11, 1962 in Greenup, KY; a son, William R. (Kerin) Horton of Bedford, PA; a stepdaughter, Phyllis Frye of Sandusky; a sister, Betty Warnock of Portsmouth; two granddaughters, Amanda Caye Horton and Ashley Dawn Gallimore; and two great-granddaughters.
A sister, Janet Stapleton, also preceded him in death.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 6 at the RALPH F. SCOTT FUNEARL HOME in Portsmouth with Rev. Evan D. Fisher officiating. The Aurora Masonic Lodge will provide Masonic Services and the James Dickey Post #23 American Legion Honor Guard will conduct military rites.
In honor of Mr. Horton’s service to our country, the flag of the U.S. Marine Corps will fly at the funeral home.
